Seventeen

Tuesday morning I stalk the front windows of The Place, waiting to see June arrive for work. Most days she sets out a wooden sign with a pun or a snarky quote.

When it finally appears, I make a dirty chai and slip a ginger scone into a paper bag.

Layla and Amber are both working today. The two of them stop to watch me.

“Yes?” I lift an eyebrow.

“Nothing.” Layla eyes the bag and paper cup. “Are we making deliveries now?”

“These are for … a friend.” I quickly make my way to the door.

“That’s … nice of you,” Amber says.

“I’ll be back this afternoon after some meetings. Think you can handle things on your own?” It’s technically my day off.

“We’ll be fine. Enjoy your day.” Layla grins at me.

Amber waves. “Tell June we said hi.”

Both women giggle before fake coughing to cover up laughing at their boss.

I pretend to glower at them. “Remember the new rule? My social life is off limits.”

“I’ll write that on the board,” Layla offers. “Do you want it to say your name specifically or just the boss? Make it more generic?”

“Surprise me.”

Outside, I cross the street and walk the short distance to In the Loop. Today’s sign reads Hookers welcome above a drawing of a crochet hook.

June’s in the front window, switching up the display. I knock on the glass and hold up the cup and bag.

“I brought you breakfast.”

She mouths something, but I can’t hear her. Pointing at the door, she pantomimes me walking.

Inside, loud music blasts from the speakers. No wonder she couldn’t hear me.

“Let me turn down the volume,” she shouts, jumping off the short ledge by the window and stumbling forward before catching her balance.

The moment reminds me of when we ended up on the floor of the closet. I wonder if she’d be open to the idea of making out in there.

“What are you listening to?” I try to place the song as the music softens.

“Some random girl power playlist on Spotify. I think this is Hailee Steinfeld’s ‘Most Girls’. The beat is good for motivating me to get my store chores done.”

“Maybe these will help.” I pass over my gifts.

Grinning, she inhales the steam from the cup. “Thank you.”

“It’s no big deal.” I shrug, happy she’s happy. “What are you working on?”

“I need to switch out the window decorations for next weekend’s whale festival. There’s a whole knitted diorama thing I made that I have to install.”

“Can’t wait to see it.” I peep inside the large plastic tote near the window. A gray whale rests atop blue and green knitted blobs.

“No peeking. You need to see the whole vision when it’s complete.” She steps between me and the bag. “What are you doing for your windows?”

“Nothing?”

Lines form across her forehead. Based on her reaction, this is probably the wrong answer.

“Layla will create something later this week.” Just as soon as I ask her to decorate our glass.

“Olaf usually refuses to participate, but Alexis and I are trying to convince him.”

I chuckle.
